Ah, the Franklin Mint! They definitely have a monopoly on cheesy merchandise that you can purchase for waaaaay too much money. These days this "Mint" really doesn't mint much anymore, they mostly make figurines, jewelry, die-cast models and all types of "collectible" merchandise. But back in the 70's they made all kinds of commemorative medals in sterling silver and bronze. If there was an event in history I'm sure they have made a medal for it. This one is from the History of the American Indian series that was made in the mid to late 70's. This series is actually really great, one side of the medal tells the traditional viewpoint of the event and the other side has the Indian view. This subject of this medal is Wounded Knee.
What's great about Franklin Mint medals in general is that they typically have some amazing artwork and design to them. The bad thing about them is that they are from the Franklin Mint and people generally think of them as super cheesy. I have often thought about starting to collect Franklin Mint sterling medals because I think they will be rare someday due to the fact that they are melted all the time just for the silver value.
