Ah, the Franklin Mint! They definitely have a monopoly on cheesy merchandise that you can purchase for waaaaay too much money. These days this "Mint" really doesn't mint much anymore, they mostly make figurines, jewelry, die-cast models and all types of "collectible" merchandise. But back in the 70's they made all kinds of commemorative medals in sterling silver and bronze. If there was an event in history I'm sure they have made a medal for it. This one is from the History of the American Indian series that was made in the mid to late 70's. This series is actually really great, one side of the medal tells the traditional viewpoint of the event and the other side has the Indian view. This subject of this medal is Wounded Knee.
What's great about Franklin Mint medals in general is that they typically have some amazing artwork and design to them. The bad thing about them is that they are from the Franklin Mint and people generally think of them as super cheesy. I have often thought about starting to collect Franklin Mint sterling medals because I think they will be rare someday due to the fact that they are melted all the time just for the silver value.

Our neighbor across the street from us died last week. We knew it was going to happen it was just a matter of time. Not because he was old but because he was drinking himself to death. He would leave early in the morning, (at first we thought he was going to work but later we found out that he lost his job) and come back in the afternoon so drunk that sometimes he would not be able to make it to his front door. He would pass out in the truck or the front porch. We didn’t know him very well, mostly because he was always drunk and we would end up having the same conversation with him over and over again- after awhile we just avoided him. He had family, and a wife who had left him a few years ago. After she left, our next-door neighbors said they tried to help him, took him to AA meetings and church, but he wasn’t really interested. They eventually gave up.
I learned from his obituary that he grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated from Palmer High School. He previously had a dog that he loved to take to the mountains and they would climb fourteeners. He also spent time chasing storms on the plains with a friend. I had no idea he had any of these interests, because the only thing we ever saw him do was drink.
How does that happen? How do you end up the way he did? How does nothing else matter? The whole thing makes me so sad. Sad that he died this way. Sad that no one could help him. Sad that we didn't really know a man who we've lived across from for 9 years. Sadder still, I think the picture in his obituary is the only time I have ever seen him smile.

Old 97's at Armstrong Hall. It was an awesome show- too bad they didn't stay still for my picture. I'm sure if I took 100 pictures, like the woman in front of me (not only was she like 6 feet tall but she also stretched out her arms to better take her pictures and to completely interfere with my view), I would have gotten a better picture but oh well- I was too busy enjoying the show- after I moved.
Really, the seats were great and the band was excellent!

We found the land we want to buy- it is 1.3 acres with pines, aspens and lots of wildflowers. Here is a view of the land. We hope to buy a trailer to go on it first so we can start enjoying it right away and then we will build a cabin. We are going to make an offer on Monday. I am so excited!

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade!
I went to the parade with Carl and his Mom. We have never been to the kick-off of the rodeo parade before so I thought it would be fun and I love parades. Here are a few of the picture I took. You can definitely tell that the guys in the second picture are politicians (at least some of them) because they all turned right to my camera, looked right at me and waved! Mayor Lionel Rivera is in the brown suit at left- I don't know who the rest of the guys are. More pictures are on my Facebook page.

Happy 4th!
Carl and I went up to look around the area where we want to buy land and drove around for most of the day. Here is my first attempt at a panoramic photo- click on it to see it larger. This is some of the view from the land we want to buy- actually looks better in person, but this still looks good. No fireworks today at Memorial Park due to the economy-but plenty of privateers!

Here is a flier for a racing event that Carl helped put together - Ford vs. Mopar Bash!
Very exciting- I redid the flier for Carl because it looked terrible, a few minor changes and it is much better.
On another note, I can't believe that half of the year is gone already. Where does the time go!
